Job Type:

Full Time, Permanent

About the Firm

This medium-sized local law firm with an extensive history in the Canterbury region has an opening in their Trusts and Estates team.

The firm has enjoyed continuous growth since the late 1960s, consistently expanding its capabilities to meet the evolving needs of Cantabrians. A purchase of another practice in 2003 and a natural disaster forced their move to their current location. Their willingness to adapt as a result has seen them enjoy continued success. They are a proactive, forward-thinking law firm, continually looking for opportunities to develop the scope of services, and always welcoming input and feedback from their loyal clients.

About the Role

This role sits within the Firm's Trusts and Estates team and will have an integral part to play in the growth of the practice area and the mentoring of juniors. Sitting between the seniors of the team (2x Partners and 1x Senior Associate), the Associate will deliver technical work and be on standby to help with leadership. There will be a large element of team collaboration but also great opportunity for autonomous work. They are looking for a real expert in this field, someone who they can build a long-term practice strategy around.

About you

To be considered for this role, we are looking for candidates that closely match this criteria:

- 5-10 PQE, preferably in a Private Practice or Advisory environment
- Hold a Bachelor of Laws and a New Zealand Practicing Certificate
- Have a strong academic transcript
- Communicate effectively with colleagues, clients, court officials and stakeholders
- Lean toward management and mentoring of juniors as a career path
- Have chosen Trusts law as your preferred practice area

You will need to have active listening and strong drafting skills with knowledge of process and structure. You will manage files from start to finish but also contribute to the wider team.

About the location

Christchurch is New Zealand's garden city and the key to the South Island.
Flat-bottomed punts glide on the Avon River, which meanders through the city centre. On its banks are cycling paths, pools and the green expanse of Hagley Park and Christchurch Botanic Gardens. In 2010 and 2011, earthquakes destroyed many of the historic centre's stone-built buildings that are still under repair, the city's skyline changed forever. Christchurch is a hub for construction and investment in its infrastructure.
